Big new mix and interview up at Sonic Router!

The wonderful people at Sonic Router blog have been kind enough to host a big new mix from me, and do an interview, which is very good of them. In fact it’s an ambition fulfilled – Sonic Router is one of the absolute top blogs / sites out there and it’s a privelege to be featured.

Here’s the link for the interview and the mix: http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/07/sr-mix-93-grievous-angel-keysound/

It’s number 93 in the series, which is of course quite amusing :)  as is the fact that it was posted right at the start of the Dog Daze of July.

Here’s some notes on the tracks:

Kerri Chandler & Monique Bingham: In The Morning (Lost Love Dub) [Bigga Sounds 2006]

Classy, groovy deep vocal house track, classic sound

Shackleton: Blood Rhythm (Grievous Angel Edit) (2011)

just a hint of my edit of this great track for atmosphere

Jamie Woon: Night Air [Ramadanman Remix] (Grievous Angel 130 Edit) [Candent Songs 2010]

Love this remix, and love playing it at 130 not 110 – special little edit from me. Great vocal tune obviously

Zander Hardy: Attack [Deep Teknologi Records 2010]

Taking it just a touch heavier now, so much great Deep Teknologi gear out there right now

Oddyssey: Use It Up and Wear It Out (Grievous Angel Edit) [RCA 1980]

Been meaning to work up an Odyssey refix since 2009, might send this out as a full edit some time

Unknown Soulja: Killing Kong [Unreleased 2010]

One of my absolute favourite tunes from 2010, brilliant refix by Unknown Soulja

Don Morris: Amiga [Deep Teknologi Records 2010]

Another great tough house sound from DT

Grievous Angel: Kleer [Unreleased 2011]

There’s an acid revival coming, here’s one of my contributions, big swooping acid arpeggios and harsh sawtooth stabs on a funky beat, want to put this out

DJ Gregory: Don’t Panic [Faya Combo 2009]

Quite simply one of the biggest house tunes ever made and a seminal influence on UK funky, still destroys the dance

T.Williams: Drumstrumental [Deep Teknologi Records 2010]

You know where I’m going with DT now :)

DiscoKaina: Click Me On (Grievous Angel Remix) [Unreleased 2011]

Cracking New York disco diva on a UK funky flex, Amy B is a fantastic vocalist, hot latin vocal action

DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto: Con Alegria (Solo ‘More Cowbell’ Remix) [Defected 2009]

Stepping up a gear now, more latin action!

Grievous Angel Vs Kalbata: Reload [Unreleased 2011]

Really heavy dread funky – brand new collaboration between me and the brilliant Kalbata who is one of my favourite producers. Wicked tune!

Grievous Angel feat. Rubi Dan: Move Down Low VIP [Soul Jazz 2010]

Probably my biggest tune. Still goes off.

Wiley: Electric Boogaloo (ROLLER EXPRESS RMX) [One Love 2010]

Amazing remix, love it so much, massive

Delphic: Halcyon. (L-Vis 1990 Remix) [Chimeric Records 2010]

LVis totally smacked it on this. Massive synths

Felix Da Housecat: Kick Drum [2009]

Weird half step house, really good, got into this when Cooly G started playing it, goes great at 140 over Loefah

Grievous Angel: Lush Vibes [Unreleased 2010]

Brand new thing from me, big synths, big melodies, proper performance, quite a few people been into this

Shackleton: Blood Rhythm (Grievous Angel Funky Remix) [Unreleased 2011]

Another version of Blood Rhythm, love this tune, can’t stop re-doing it!

So I’m pretty proud of this mix. Plenty more coming – another garage / dubstep one, a 4×4 UKG one, and an 80s rock one all waiting to go up!

New grime mix

I love grime but I haven’t done that many grime mixes. I suppose the biggest one so far is the Grime in the Dancehall mix I did with John Eden for blogariddims. That was back in 2008 and not long after, I did this mix… and then never sent it to anyone other than John. I always thought it was alright but could’ve been just a bit better. Anyway, I’ve gone back to it and it sounds fine TBH so I’m happy to put it up, especially since I’ve got a few more grime mixes I want to get into. I mean, I still haven’t put up a mix with my favourite grime instrumental – in fact my favourite electronic record of all time – Big$hot’s Glitch. Trust me, that tune destroys the dance every time.

So this is a mix of mostly mid- to late-period grime, some instrumentals and some vocal cuts, with an emphasis on banging percussive FOWARD-ness. It’s only half an hour and I can’t remember what all the tunes are but they’re all good. I think you’ll like it.

It’s here: http://www.grievousangel.net/GAMixes/GrimeMix_GrievousAngel.mp3

Tracklisting:

Starfox: Jumanji / 2004

Slew Dem inst’l / 2007

Crazy Titch: I’m Like You’re Like / ?

Tinchy Stryder – ft Chipmunk: Sorry U Are / 2008

I did the soundtrack to a fab short film and it’s now online

Shaun Bloodworth is a well known and excellent photographer who is best known in music circles for his portrait work for Rinse. Those amazing pictures of people like Geeneus, Chef, Skream etc? They’re by Shaun. He did the Margins Music album cover too. So he’s a badman basically. Plus, for this year’s Sonar, Mary Anne Hobbs commissioned Shaun to make a film to act as a backdrop for the artists performing on her stage. This took things to another level, with Shaun using the video function on his stills camera to shoot video of raves in Sheffield, as well as filming video portraits of particular ravers.

The film turned out great.

And then he wanted to have it out there with a soundtrack – and got a slot to premiere it, at prestigious Sheffield art cinema the Showroom. He had someone else lined up to do the soundtrack, but they couldn’t do it, so a week last Wednesday Shaun asked if I could do it.

By midnight that night, I’d delivered. And Wednesday this week, we went to the premiere!

That was an amazing night, with Mark from Wall of Sound and 6Music doing a speech on how amazing Sheffield is for inspirational music, and various art figures and Council big wigs in attendence. Best of all, Martin Ware from the Human League and Heaven 17 was there talking about the great new film about Heaven 17 that also premiered. It was cool!

And now, Shaun’s film is online. Titled Minds Locked Together, it’s a portrait of Sheffield clubbing, putting the crowd to the forefront. There are various DJs and MCs in the film, most importantly and amusingly the mighty Rodigan, but it’s really all about the people. It’s scenius in action.

My sound track starts off with jungle, including the title track, before sliding down into house, funky and sort-of-dubstep. It went off on the big system in the Showroom and I’m really pleased with the way the whole thing comes together.

You can see it here.

Please blog this, write about it etc, it’s really worth supporting!

Post on Brainfeeder here.

Post on the Bleep blog here.

Move Down Low VIP now out on Soul Jazz Records!

Move Down Low VIP - out on Soul Jazz

Move Down Low VIP - out on Soul Jazz

Yup. I got a release on Soul Jazz records. I am soooo excited! Taken almost a year to come out but I am so pleased.

It’s out on Monday but its in the Soul Jazz web shop now.

It’s a new funky remix of Move Down Low. The main draw is the VIP – which is, though I say so myself, absolutely massive. Goes off every time in the dance. Best thing I’ve ever done. All massive drums, big drops, snatch of Rubi Dan’s vocal – latin funky apocalypse. Like the Ice Rink b-side mix but bigger and ruder. Sinden’s been caning it for months.

The A-side is the original funky mix – not the one that came out last year on my Devotional Dubz imprint, the one I did for Kode 9. As has passed into legend, I made the tune, sent it to Kode that night, he cut it the next day and played it at the first of Rinse’s Beyond funky sessions. He’s been playing it ever since and it’s on the new DJ Kicks mix CD he’s done. So it’s a result all round.

Will be in all the usual stores any day now.

Listen to the A-side here.

OneMan on Doc Daneeka

Blackdown
“O: All the values I enjoyed in early garage, especially the bpm, the shuffle, the beat base – it’s all coming back again with this new stuff. The whole 'new Wot Do U Call It dark house, Martin Kemp, Doc Daneeka thing” is that I think it fills a gap in where house is meeting dubstep at the moment and I think its really important and relevant to both scenes, because its like what I hear in those records is what definitely what I heard in dubstep in 2004/05 – just a sense of space and atmosphere, not so much about the melody but just bass beats and weird odd sounds.”

Amply demonstrated at Doc Daneeka’s fantastic set at the Harley last night. The pure rhythm, garage-tempo bass and drum, massive subs and crisp beats, that’s what’s working right now.

Though interestingly the biggest reaction of the night was for speed garage, really made the whole venue jump. Bodes well for my remix of Gremino’s Bee and Cee which pretty much merked it on Blackdown and Dusk’s Rinse show in January.

I missed Ben UFO last night though, just too knackered to make it. Would have been good to see what the best DJ in the country is drawing for at the moment to triangulate with Doc Daneeka and OneMan.

Oh my god I’m playing Exodus / DMZ

Exodus DMZ 4th birthday

Yes. I’m playing Exodus / DMZ next month.

Warming up for El B and the magnificent Heatwave.

Most of my dubstep heroes in room 1. Kode, Mala, Loe, Scuba, Silkie…

Absolutely fucking mental. I cannot believe it.

They want 80s dancehall and “your own productions”. So there’ll be some new funky stuff, maybe the Shabba / Wicked Inna Bed remix that’s I’ve been working. Dying to play some Congo Natty too – probably Your Love, since it’s the greatest record ever made.

This is so fantastic…

Clean living in difficult circumstances: Haiti

Clean living in difficult circumstances: Haiti
None of these facts really point towards a supernatural cause belying the natural disasters that Haiti and New Orleans have endured. I’m a strong believer that “The Devil” only really exists as a personification of the horrors that human beings perpetrate upon one another and upon the planet. Such as slavery, for instance. Or being so abjectly terrified of a free black territory that has violently thrown off the yoke of slave owners, that you conspire to undermine its economy and stability in such a way that the repercussions are still being felt centuries later.

Ah, a new boy! I helped run the introduction of OS7 when I was working in the Mac business. I go back to system 4 and a bit of system 3, but I used System 6 (and for a while, 5) professionally – including when I was a Mac journalist.

All of which shows nothing more than that I’ve got a few more grey hairs than the eternally youthful Mr Ingram :)

Review of my year

calendar

calendar

2009 has been the most exciting year since 2005, loads of great stuff coming out and the clubs have been FIRING, people have really gone for it. Every time I’ve played out the vibe has been fantastic, less so in London obviously but everywhere else has been cracking. People have wanted it. Bad.

I’ve loved the way that funky has turned so much around. Both in itself – Cooly G’s Love Dub is my tune of the year, alongside her Dis Boy – but also in its ripples and echoes. Dubstep heads took the hint and created a spectrum of new sounds from Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Brackles, Untold and many more. The best of the old garage heads saw funky for what it was – an attempt to deal with the unfinished business of UK Garage, and Zed Bias and MJ Cole made some fantastic tracks as a result. Mind you, most of them aren’t out yet.

Dubstep itself was all about the dark rollage of people Kryptic Minds and SP:MC, the psychedelic grime of Joker, and the percussive deepness of Peverelist, Ramadanman and Untold. I’ve done quite a good mix of this stuff for Inverted Audio: http://www.inverted-audio.co.uk/$blog/2009/12/29/_i_a__mix_07_grievous_angel?_c=1

Musically it’s been a big year for me. There’s nothing like seeing a big room go off to your tunes and I’ve seen my funky and garage gear light up crowds – it’s an enormous privilege, I’ll treasure those memories forever. Kode in particular has been caning Move Down Low for months. Loads of DJs have been playing my stuff… Skream, Blackdown, Atki2, Tim Dub Boy, MJ Cole, Jamie Vex’d, Paul Hotflush, Mary Anne Hobbs… I’ve put out three singles (Loser, Soundclash, my funky refix of the grime classic Ice Rink ) that have done well. There are some more to come in 2010. I’ve done a DJ mix for Radio 1 and had loads of play on the pirates. I’ve done guest mixes for loads of websites. I’ve just put another album out, my remix / DJ mix / dub album of the entirety of Blackdown and Dusk’s Margins Music. It’s been one hell of a ride. And I moved into the house I built.

It’s been a great year!

BBC Asian Network plays Grievous Angel remix of Indi Kaur / A Bridge Far Away

So,  Forensics was one of the hardest working men in dubstep. And now he’s on this whole other thing which was very hush-hush – except it’s blowing up already, so I guess we can now talk publicly about A Bridge Far Away. Downtempo niceness with vocals and real instruments, including some tunes with the magnificent Indi Kaur. I had the pleasure of remixing one of them, called Drift, which I turned into a crunchy, sour, heavily spiced halfstep pounder.

And it got played on BBC Asian Network last night by the redoubtable Bobby Friction, who is actually one of the best radio DJs in the UK. Linkage with listen again facilities now up.

In other news, Kiss 100 DJ and crucial new music maven Sinden has been in touch and is also playing some of the new GA gear that is about to hit the stores, so stay tuned to him too.

last weekend for FREE dust science ep

after years of involvement in dust science I am delighted to now be one of their artists! And I am part of a corking free ep – but hurry to get it…

here’s the info…

To celebrate the label relaunch, Dust Science has a new EP of established and new artists who are based in the label’s hometown of Sheffield (UK). The “In The North EP” seeks to re-establish Sheffield’s reputation as the touchstone of high quality electronic musical innovation.

The Black Dog offer Tesco, a chunky, rolling tech-house with delightful Sheffield-style hooky pads. Carl Taylor’s Walk On By is a moody slice of Omar S-style electronic soul. New signing Grievous Angel, whose dubstep, garage and uk funky releases have torn up pirate radio and dancefloors for the last three years, delivers a heavily swung slice of percussive, techy dubstep. Youthful wobble mentalist The Bass Soldier provides a heavy slice of electro-soaked gutter house that will literally shake the room into life.
